Who Dat Boy

In Today's lesson Morgan introduced us to this video and I felt it was really creative.

Tyler, The Creator - "Who Dat Boy"

Here are a few of the notes I made that I feel i could possibly recreate in my own music video.

  • Text - Unrelated to the lyrics i.e. "5 Seconds Later"
  • Fish Eye Lens - for the peep hole through the door
  • Cloning
  • Change of tempo
  • Colourful - Bright Tones
  • Screen within the screen - voyeurism - i.e. CCTV
  • "Mask" to make himself white - this was done so he could get away from the police

Music Categories: Narrative Music Videos

A pure narrative video will feature no lip-synched singing and the narrative will often relate to the lyrics of the song in some way with the lyrics often reflected within the story. The most common form of music video is a combination of Performance and Narrative. This is a video that shows a performance by the band / artist, but also has a narrative within it. Often the video narrative will mimic a film genre.

Below are some videos that fit under the Narrative category of music videos.

"Money Man" / "Put That On My Set" - A$AP Mob -  ft. A$AP Rocky, A$AP Nast, Yung Lord, Skepta

Dexter Navy's epic 12-minute short film for A$AP Rocky is an intense piece of social realism mixed with magic realism - set in London, but with universal resonance.
A double video for the tracks Money Man and Put That On My Set, this is an impressionistic take on the thug life, where the drugs being dealt are the butterflies that fill the city air.
Dexter Navy was inspired by seeing a friend's bag of butterfly wings to jump on the phone to Rocky to convince him that the drugs in the video should be butterflies. Days later Navy was shooting in Ladbroke Grove, transforming that idea into a harrowing, violent, yet visually stunning story.

Everything was shot on black and white 16mm Arri, and 16mm Bolex, with visual effects work at Absolute Post - with a brilliant edit by Navy.

"Dilemma" - Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland

"Foolish" - Ashanti

This music video has linked to the lyrics but in more subtle way then most.

"Same Girl" - R.Kelly ft. Usher

Music Categories: Performance Music Videos

"Single Ladies" - Beyoncé

"Chandelier" - Sia

"You Don't Have to Call" - Usher

My favourite part about this music video is 2 minutes into the music video when Usher and his "crew" are pooping to the beat emphasising that part of the music.

Music Categories: Abstract Music Videos

A Dream of You and Me – Future Islands

             Genre; Electropop
Abstract video – moderately common for electropop music videos
Weak relationship between lyric sand visuals with simple things like when talking about the sea there are seashells on the screen.
Ripples in the paint and/or the sand occur to the beat, giving a speaker effect.
No frequent reference to notion of looking as it is an abstract video.
No close up shots of the artists to create visual style as it is an abstract video.
No inter-textual references to other media texts

Goodwins Theory

Andrew Goodwin is a key theorist in Media, so I have researched five music videos to see if they conform to Goodwin's theory of Music Videos. I have used the key points in his theory as a guideline to see if the following music videos conform to his theory:
  • "One Wish" - Ray J
  • "A Dream of You and Me" - Future Islands
  • "7 Days" - Craig David
  • "Snap Out of It" - Artic Monkeys
  • "Wild Thoughts" - DJ Khaled

First Music Video Theorist

Today we learnt about Andrew Goodwin, a media theorist who pointed out some conventions of a music video.

1.  The characteristics of the genre itself. The type of music will inevitably impact the type of music video it will be. You can withstand from following these conventions, but you will notice that most music videos follow this rule.

 2.  The relationship between lyrics and the visuals, whether what the words are in the song are blatantly shown in the video. For example, singing about apples and having apples in the video, versus not having them. Or having something that could be metaphorically connected to the apple.

3.  The relationship between the music and the visuals. For example editing to the beat, adding pulses at the same time the drum kicks in.

4.  Use of close up shots of the artists, often the artist is centre screen in their music videos.

5.  Voyeurism, looking at themselves as artists, whether its looking at their cd's, playing the record at the start of the video, or looking at themselves in the mirror.

6.  Inter-textual references, so references to political events, or other real life issues, or media.
