Genre Research: Jazz

As a group we are still unsure of what genre of music we want to do, therefore I have decided to do some research into our top contenders of Genres (including songs and artists). So the first genre I'll be looking further into is JAZZ. Now as a group we like the idea of a Jazz video because it doesn't fit in with the usual music videos students on this course choose, therefore, our video is more likely to stick out.

One of my favourite Jazz artists has to be Louis Armstrong. He was an American trumpeter, composer, singer and occasional actor, who was with out a doubt one of the most influential figures in Jazz. His most famous song would have to be "What a Wonderful World" which has since been used in a range of movies from animated children films to over 18 horror movies. Some of his other songs include:

"What a Wonderful World"

The next artist I looked into was Ella Jane Fitzgerald, she was an American jazz singer who was often referred to as the "First Lady of Song" , "Queen of Jazz" and "Lady Ella". Ella was discovered in an amateur contest and then went on to become the top female jazz singer for decades. In 1958, she made history in becoming the first African-American woman to win a Grammy Award. She then went on to win 13 Grammys in total and sell more than 40 million albums. One of her most popular songs "Dream a Little Dream of Me" also featured Louis Armstrong. Some of her other songs include (a number of them also feature Armstrong):

"Dream a Little Dream of Me"

Some of the other most influential Jazz artists include the likes of :
  • Art Tatum
  • Thelonious Monk
  • Charles Mingus
  • Art Blakey
  • Dizzy Gillespie
  • Max Roach
  • Billie Holiday
  • John Coltrane
  • Count Basie
  • Benny Goodman
  • Coleman Hawkins
  • Miles Davis
  • Charlie Parker
  • Duke Ellington
  • Louis Armstrong
